Narrative
Of Writtlewick, Chelmsford
Of Surrey
Of Kent
AW says he was youngest of about 8 children. An artist. Very unbusinesslike. Would go up to london from Kent on train to bank.Forget to take any money and leave his gold watch with the station master as surety for his ticket.
Left most of his money to 2nd wife's family. (she already had children). Apparently he left her family X and his original family (estate-X), overestimating value of estate, so that original family got very little and felt hard done by.
Christine did not get on with her and left to live with a Vlasto aunt.
DHG exhibited at the Royal Academy.
Candy has a small pastel? Signed DHG 3/9/26
I have found 4 small pastels, in a similar style, one marked 'RownerMill'. Rowner was where DHG lived with Mary Vlasto and where she died.
Anne Winstone/Acock says it was a big Elizabethan house. Dad thinks it burnt down.
Jane and I went up to Rowner to see if we could spot the mill or the house - no luck.
It would be nice to have a period picture of the house and DHG/MV.
I found this quote at http://www.brockhamvillage.co.uk/about/about_history/about_revcheales.htm :
"Col and Mrs Seymour of Brockham Park organised a memorial fund to provide the reredos of English oak, carved in Munich. When it was dedicated, on January 30th 1886, the Vicar said, "And now all has been done that love and friendship could do. There are two white tombstones in Betchworth Churchyard; there are two memorials here, east and west, the reredos and the window."
After the beautiful reredos had been dedicated, further "improvements" were made in the sanctuary. Oak wings bearing the Creed, the Lord's Prayer and the Ten Commandments were fastened to the wall at each side of the altar. Pine choir stalls were fitted and the walls of the nave and chancel were decorated with painted stencilled all-over patterns. The whole of the stencilling was carried out by Messrs Anning, Elson, Gosnell, Kempe, Manwell, Owen, II. Risbridger and W. Verral free of charge. The same year the church was made warm and dry by the introduction of Grundy's Hot Air Apparatus."

Lot no. 225
Realised price: GBP 70
19th century English school Pontail Farm Brockham oil on panel circa 1896 inscribed H D Gosnell on reverse with a watercolour of a highland croft 12.5cm x 21.5cm (2) E30-60
I think this is probably DHG - more research required.
FamilySearch.org 1881 census online mentions a W.H.Gosnell - born about 1860, but does not mention DHG. I cannot find any mention of WHG anywhere else, but DHG is mentioned living with his mother in the 1891 census. I can't view the original image of the 1881 census, because the relevant piece is missing from the scan. I think WHG is a copying error for DHG :
