Perhaps earlier reproduction ? - this is the only one I have ever seen.
Perhaps a later version of the 'Bronze' (T518 - above) pots, introduced after the B&W "Extra Moist" variety.

These were made for the Titanic Exhibition. An orginal was raised from the Titanic's debris field. It Appears to corroborate existance of lid above. However, uses '& Co.' form of company name, which ended in 1898, whereas Titanic sunk in 1912 - a 14 year hiatus. Could this be explained by late use of an earlier lid, or the 'recycling' of a pot over a period of years ? Maybe White Star had the pots refilled ?

  • Two grooves in rim of base (2 and 8 O'Clock)
  • Mark on base (maybe says "1/4") at 9 O'Clock (hard to see in photo)

Johnstone's Soap

Price & Gosnell
Johnstone's Windsor Soap
Probably 1832-1834
With label (below) overlaid and removed - this may suggest a date of 1832-134, as 'Price & Gosnell' morphed into 'John Gosnell & Co.' - interesting...
'His Majesty' might be George III (1760-1820), George IV (1820-1830) or William IV (1830-1837).
Note: something written in pencil at 10 O'Clock - possibly '18/5 .. D V 3' or '18/S .. D V 3'
Note: 'Successors' and 'Embossers' spelt with an 'fs' - can these help with date?
Note similar crest in use on this 'Price & Gosnell'
Court Plaster label.
Name of Embosser - Whiting - prominent on label.
Johnstone's Windsor Soap
Probably 1832-1834
Looks as is it was created to be stuck over earlier 'Price & Gosnell' appellation, on death of JG senior and JG junior's creation of 'John Gosnell & Co.'.
Johnstone's Windsor Soap
Came from same album as two above labels, most probably from same bar of soap...
Probably 1832-1834
Note that 'Prepared by...' box looks like a later, rushed (strange 'I.' for 'J.' typo) addition to label (I have mocked up a copy without this possible addition - perhaps packaging had to be changed rapidly upon company change over...)
Note identical background pattern in this 'Price & Gosnell' Court Plaster label.
Johnstone's Windsor Soap
1834-1837 ("His Majesty" is William IV)
Name of Embosser - Whiting - demoted to subscript.
Johnstone's Windsor Soap
1834-1837 ("His Majesty" is William IV)
Name of Embosser - Whiting - demoted to subscript.

7.5x11.7cms
1840-1861 (Albert marries Victoria - Albert Dies)
This is the only mention of "13, Rumford Place" address of which I am aware (might help with dating).
Possibly towards beginning of these dates - as 'Price & Gosnell' is still being mentioned.
Name of Embosser - perhaps Whiting ? - ommitted.

Found in album with other items dating between 1835-1865 ('Carte Porcelaine' typical in Belgium over this period)

Search down for mentions of "Gosnell" in The Art Of Perfumery. If "Amandine" is the Almond Soap mentioned, then this might date the advert between 1852-1855...
Note mention of Tooth Paste being sold in 'pots' and the representation of the pot being the 'early' variety with the 'full stop'.
Since Trichosaron is described as the 'Last And Greatest Addition' (Patented in 1852), Cherry Tooth Paste (from 1853?) is mentioned and many of the other products are seldom documented ones (therefore older), I think that this must be dated closely to 1853.

triton247@ebay says: "...dating to around late 1850's through to 1860's. This is directly based on a painting The Beggar Boys by B.E. Murillo. He was a famous Spanish artist during the 17th Century and provided future inspiration to some of the great names in the 18th and 19th centuries, such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and John Constable. One of his specialities was ragged beggar boys and beggar girls, hence the composition and title of this painting and pot lid....Manufactured by F & R Pratt, Fenton, Staffordshire."

CAUTION to MERCHANTS. - JOHNSTONE's PATENT WINDSOR SOAP. - PRICE and GOSNELL, (late Patey, Butts, Price and Gosnell), Perfumers to his Royal Highness the Prince Regent, 12 Three King-court, Lombard-street, beg to caution their friends, merchants, and the public, against the many spurious imitations of their articles, which are imposed by un- principled persons upon the unwary, by means of pirated bills, labels, and catalogues, exact copies of theirs. Price and Gosnell's Patent Windsor, Jessamine, real Palm Oil, and old Brown Windsor Soaps and Perfumery manufactory established nearly a century, continues to be carried on ar the original premises, 12, Three King-court, Lombard-street; where Lavender, Honey, and Rose Waters, also Macassar, Verdigonian, Russia, and French Oils, for the hair, as well as every description of perfumery, of approved qualities, are supplied wholesale and for exportation. Price and Gosnell have no connexion whatever with any other house.

GENUINE and original MACASSAR OIL, for pre- serving, beautifying, and promoting the growth of the hair; imported by PRICE and GOSNELL, (late Patey, Butts, Price, and Gosnell), Otto of Rose merchants, and perfumers to his Royal Highness the Prince Regent. Hair dressed with Price and Gos- nell's Macassar Oil becomes pleasingly soft, bright, and luxuriant in its growth; and hair that has been made harsh, turning gray, and falling off by the use of spurious imitations, will be soon restored to its natural colour, brilliance, and beauty. Sold wholesale, and for exportation, in bottles at 3s.0?d., 10s.6d., and 1 guinea, by Price and Gosnell, at their Johnstone's Patent Windsor, Real Palm Oil, and Old Brown Windsor Soap Manufactory, (established nearly a cen- tury), 12, Three Kings-court, Lombard-street. Genuine Otto of Roses, price 5s., 7s.6d., 10s.6d., and 5 guineas per bottle.

Printed Document. "Kimball & Co., is submitting the following Cornucopiae of choice and fashionable Perfumery and Fancy Articles to the inspection of an American Public, take a pride in naming, that they are manufactured in toto, from the most costly of Flowers and Aromatics it was possible for money or perseverance to procure; and feeling, as every lover of elegance must have done, the infinity of ill that has occurred from the pretensions of Empirics, and the vending of spurious or unskilfully combined commodities, they determined to place their chemical designs under a man of tried talent and of established reputation. It is to them a contemplation of satisfaction that they have been enabled, though at a great expense, to engage the eminent and well-known Chemist, Mr. Wm. Johnson, late Phytologist to Messrs. Price & Gosnell, of London, under whose immediate inspection every laboratoric operation will be performed. Purchasers, therefore, may rest assured of receiving nothing from the Establishment of Kimball & Co., that is not composed of the choicest materials, and of as rare a quality as it is in the power of experience or skill to produce."

Gosnell Bros. & Co.

Gosnell Bros. & Co. seems to have been Edward and Richard Hamer Gosnell, Sons of Edward Gosnell, brother of John Gosnell of John Gosnell & Co.
By 1875 these two Gosnells were involved with Taylor & Son at at 121, King's Road, Chelsea - a respected company established since 1770.
It looks like the brothers dissolved their partnership on March 1 1879 and the business was continued by Edward.
Edward Gosnell shows up in the 1881 census as living at 121, King's Road Chelsea - definitively tieing the Gosnells of John Gosnell & Co. to the Gosnells of Gosnell Bros. & Co.
Gosnell Bros. was still going from the same King's Road address in October 1884
Edward died in 1886. Whether this was the end of Gosnell Bros. & Co. is yet to be established.
So, why would Gosnell Bros. dump the Taylor part of their brand, which has 100 years of history and differentiates them from John Gosnell & Co, then go on to produce a product competing directly with a JG product in packaging that looks nearly identical to JG packaging ? We need to know more...
I could not find any mention of a Gosnell / Taylor marriage but it does look as if Taylor may have been producing some of the raw ingredients for Gosnell products or even white labelling their own produce as JG. Maybe JG encouraged his nephews to take an interest in Taylors and this grew into something more...
